Name: Ichiru Kiryuu
Canon: Vampire Knight
Canon Point: Post Death Ch. 40 of the Vampire Knight Manga
Age: 17
History:
Kiryuu Ichiru, like his older brother, Kiryuu Zero, was born into the prestigious Kiryuu Family. The Kiryuu’s were considered one of the best hunters of their times, and both Ichiru and Zero’s parents were excellent hunters. Twins that were born into the hunter families were considered a curse because the stronger twin would absorb the weaker twin within the womb. Somehow, this was not the case for Ichiru and Zero. Unlike his brother, Ichiru was a lot weaker and sicklier, whereas Zero was gifted. It was clear from the beginning when the two of them began learning how to be vampire hunters. Ichiru was not a fighter unlike his older brother and slowly and gradually, they began to fall further apart. Despite the overwhelming love and care his brother showered him with, he festered a darkness that would eventually lead to the demise of the two brothers' parents. Ichiru had a chronic illness that could not be cured by any means and struggled to keep up with his brother. Even their parents said that he was not suited to be a hunter.Personality:
Ichiru already had a growing resentment for his brother, and his parents, assuming they had cherished Zero more than him. It further twisted his mental state, and he began to hate his parents instead of loving them. Eventually, he met with Hiou, Shizuka, a beautiful, sad pureblood vampire that was crying on a tree. The moment he saw her, he realized they shared something in common, and thus began to secretly meet her behind his family’s back. Then, the tragic night occurred. Hiou, Shizuka was infuriated with the Kiryuu’s for killing her lover, who at that time was deemed a Level E (even though he had not fallen to that level yet.) and little did she know that it was a farce created by Kuran, Rido her fiancé. Shizuka sucked Zero's blood, and began to twist his fate. Hiou Shizuka single handedly took out Zero and Ichiru’s parents while holding onto Zero.
Ichiru requested specifically that she leave him alive. Ichiru wanted to watch his brother break in front of him and suffer just as he had, even though he already knew that it was not his brother’s fault. It wasn’t anyone’s fault but his own that he was too weak and useless. He couldn’t fight off the hate he had for his brother, along with the love. After the murder of the Kiryuu’s, Ichiru left with Shizuka and devoted his life to her as her servant. He lived a pleasant couple of years with Shizuka, and the pureblood took care of him kindly. She gave Ichiru her blood to cure his chronic illness and it worked. Ichiru was no longer a sickly child, and grew to be a fine swordsman, something that his parents would have been proud of if they knew. Ichiru eventually grew up from his old mental state, though that darkness continued to keep its fingers around him.
He appeared later in the manga when Shizuka possessed Maria, one of her relatives that attended Cross Academy for a short time for a purpose. Ichiru followed after her quietly and watched over her body and followed her orders. He kept a mask on him most of the time, shielding his emotions from Shizuka. He wasn’t very good with emotional control when it concerned Shizuka. At some point, it was rather certain that he had fallen in love with Shizuka. Ichiru made his first official appearance after Zero sought out Maria, because he learned that Shizuka was currently borrowing her body. When the fight began with Shizuka’s borrowed body, Ichiru could be seen above dropping a Katana for Shizuka to attack Zero. The fight resulted in Zero being unable to kill Shizuka, and Ichiru briefly speaks with her before the arc ended.
The third appearance was during the evening mingling event for the day class and night class students. He carried Shizuka’s real body into the room she and Yuuki were occupying. Ichiru left with Maria’s body before Zero appeared. Shizuka was prepared to bite Yuuki when Zero interfered. Ichiru returned with a rather grand entrance amidst the fight with Zero and Shizuka, tossing her Katana through Zero’s arm to stop him from further injuring Shizuka. Shizuka got irritated with him for interfering saying he was uncalled for. Ichiru expressed his dislike for how Shizuka was treating his brother and him. Ichiru didn't waste time to reveal who he was and took off the mask that hid his face revealing to them who he was. Ichiru freely protected Shizuka from being attacked and she eventually leaves to give him a chance to 'catch up' with his brother. Zero tried to chase after Shizuka, but Ichiru would not allow it and blocked his way. He spoke up about how it was cold of Zero to ignore him.
Ichiru implied that Zero had already known what started to fester in his heart. He also adds that Zero wanted to remain ignorant of Ichiru’s dark intentions. He spoke about how their parents had become meaningless to Ichiru as the days passed and how he specifically requested that Shizuka to leave him alive. He proceeded to ask if Zero had suffered enough and if Zero’s suffering was equivalent to Ichiru’s. Ichiru finally stated how purebloods were like gods, and that Shizuka had saved him from his chronic illness as she promised him. He was no longer sickly or unwell. The statement was followed by Ichiru stating that he wanted to kill Zero, but he would forgive his brother if he left with Ichiru as Shizuka’s servant. Zero attempted to attack Ichiru but he countered with a collapsible sword that he pulled out of his sleeve.
The two of them started a fight and Yuuki interfered. Ichiru was not amused by her interjection and pointed his weapon at Yuuki, threatened to kill her if she stood in his way. Zero proceeded to point Bloody Rose at him, and Ichiru calmly looked back and mused that he thought Vampire Hunter Weapons only worked on vampires. That immediately triggered Zero to realize that Ichiru was not a vampire, but still human. The fight was cut short when Zero stated he smelled blood. Ichiru panicked instantly, calling out Shizuka’s name and ran in the direction she had left through. Upon approaching the empty room it was too late, and Shizuka was dying. Ichiru ran to her side and clung to her, begging her not to leave him and begging her not to die. He hugged her close to his body while Shizuka spoke softly to him. He even offered his blood to her so she wouldn’t die, but she denied it until the end. She told him she could not change him into a vampire. He was the only one she could not change. Ichiru did indeed love her, without a doubt. His fondness for her was beyond just respect and admiration. When Zero finally approached them Ichiru’s face was smeared with her blood, and he stated to Zero that he had killed Shizuka, before disappearing out the large balcony window.
He made a brief appearance when Shiki, Senri came back to his home. It seemed like Ichiru was currently serving Senri’s great uncle. He was then seen being dropped off by Senri’s great uncle, saying that he had to prove himself useful if he wanted assistance from his lord. Ichiru agreed to carry out his task. With Zero’s approval, Cross Academy gained a new student and that student was Ichiru, who introduced himself rather nicely to the class. He even wore a pleasant smile to grace their presence with. He passed by Yuuki and his demeanor briefly changed. He stated that Zero usually had a nice taste in things, but to see her as someone precious, he didn’t approve of it. He infuriated Yuuki. Yuuki’s classmates were pleasantly excited about Ichiru.
It seemed like he had a rather smooth mouth when he spoke with them. The girls asked him why he didn’t wear his hair the same way as Zero, and he said he could change it if it suited them with a smile. It seemed the class president and everyone else in the class received Ichiru really well. They mentioned that he was a lot easier to approach than his antisocial brother. Yuuki approached Ichiru during their break time and asked to speak to him in private. He willing went along with her but also brought up how stupid she was for calling him out when she had no idea if he was an enemy or an ally. He even asked if this was how she worried Zero all the time and before they could actually engage in anything else, Zero found the two of them, and emitted a rather dangerous aura. A lot of the students were surprised with Zero’s appearance and they all ran away in surprise, while Ichiru commented on how he surprised the students enough that they were all leaving in a flash.
Zero told him to hurry up and finish his revenge and Ichiru replied that he thought Zero approved of his attendance here so that his brother would console him, but he didn’t do anything. He merely said he was holding back for now, then left to return to the classroom and dismissively said for Zero to show him around the dorms later. While Zero and Yuuki were doing their prefect jobs, Ichiru was semi hidden behind a tree, watching them quietly with a rather blank expression on his face. It seemed like he was planning something quietly. During the evening, Ichiru went to greet Kurosu Kaien, but he by chance met Kaname, and Kaname greeted him briefly. Ichiru expressed his dislike for Kaname, by stating that he had no interest in being part of Kaname’s game of chess. Kaname asked him who he was after and Ichiru stated he was a normal human so Kaname couldn’t put his hands on him. He wasn’t a Vampire Hunter, and he wasn’t a vampire. There was no reason for Kaname to touch him. He even slyly added before leaving that if Kaname saw him as an eyesore, he could get rid of him if he liked.
Kaien at some point called Ichiru over for dinner, while Yuuki was ill in bed. Zero was watching over her and amazingly enough, Ichiru did show up for dinner as Kaien wanted. Kaien left them alone and headed out to finish dinner. He also implied that he didn’t want them fighting. Ichiru then told Zero to give up on Yuuki and that his taste in women had become really bad. With that said, he left the room. It was then revealed that Ichiru was trying to give Yuuki Kuran Rido’s blood so that she would awaken into the Pureblood that she was. The story progressed and Kaname ran off with Yuuki. Zero dashed after them and ran into Ichiru. The two exchanged blank expressions before Ichiru met with Senri’s currently possessed body. He lowered himself and said that he was unable to use Rido’s blood and apologized, and moved to take his turn watching Rido’s casket. Ichiru briefly stated, ‘death to those who brought about Shizuka-sama’s death,’ and left.
Ichiru was left guarding Rido Kuran’s casket by himself when Kaname finally makes his entrance much later. He asked Ichiru to open the casket for him and he did not hesitate to unchain the coffin. Kaname commented on Ichiru’s obedience and he started to speak about the curse of twins within the vampire hunter society. Ichiru replied that it was fitting for that to happen because it was said that the ancestors of vampire hunters ate a vampire in order to gain the ability to hunt vampires. Kaname continued to speak about the curse and mentioned that at some point one will devour the other’s life force and result in a uniquely strong Hunter. Ichiru said that they were not there to talk about him and his twin.
Ichiru finished taking off the chains and said that he was not responsible for anything that happened from this point on. Kaname mentioned how it was because of Rido that Shizuka’s fate was twisted. If it were not for Rido, she would have lived. Kaname took Ichiru’s sword and proceeded to feed Rido his blood. After Kaname left the scene, Rido was able to rise again due to the blood Kaname gave him, and Ichiru greeted him. He then attempted to kill Rido but it was all in vain. Rido retaliated, giving Ichiru a deep wound. He pulled himself over to where Zero was and shot him with Bloody Rose. He then spoke to him, saying that he was much more aware of his own existence and how meaningless it was. Zero only made it obvious by doting on him.
They had a conversation regarding their parents and their views. Zero eventually mentioned the hideous wound on his side, and Ichiru replied that he wanted to do something for Shizuka and Rido was the one that Ichiru had to kill for her, but even then he was unable to do anything. He continues to talk about how it was twisted that their parents were mere dolls. They only obeyed orders and even when Ichiru tried to reason with Shizuka about them it was in vain. They still went to hunt Shizuka’s lover who had not fallen into a Level E. He was disgusted that their mother returned to hug them with the arms that had been recently stained with blood. He considered his parents ‘pets’ of the Hunter Association and that they knew nothing more than orders. They even had to report him as unfit to be a Hunter. Running out of time, he mentioned how he knew what he could do by himself was limited.
He said that it felt comfortable being in his brother’s arms and it was the proof that they were once from the same egg. He then forced Zero to take whatever was left of his life, because he knew he was dying. He wanted Zero to live on and fulfill his goals no matter what. It was the least he could do for the both of them. Ichiru was also very content when he learned that Zero had a place for him in his heart, and it was comforting to know that his brother did not truly hate him.
Ichiru was originally born unhealthy and weak. He was quite sickly and often took medicine for his chronic condition. He was very much attached to his twin brother, Kiryuu Zero, and often spent most of his time with his older twin. Ichiru used to be able to express his feelings, but as the years passed, Ichiru closed himself off and began having dark feelings towards his brother. His hate for his brother began to fester. Compared to his healthy older brother, he was weak and unable to train properly as a Vampire Hunter. His parents had deemed him unfit to become a vampire hunter, and he knew that one day he would no longer be able to follow after his brother. He also thought many times that it would have been much better if he didn't exist. If he existed, he was only holding down Zero. He wanted Zero to be free from him because he felt that he was burden to Zero's restrained nature.Abilities:
He hated his existence, and realized that he had no place in the world until he met Hiou Shizuka, a Pureblood Vampire who was crying on a blossoming tree. He found something in her that related to him because they were both lonely, and had no place in this world. Ichiru began to meet this Pureblood Vampire secretly. He assisted Hiou Shizuka in the murder of his and Zero's parents. Ichiru held no remorse for the parents that took care of him. He only really needed Zero and that showed when he requested Shizuka to leave Zero alive, only after she had sucked his blood and left him to change into a vampire.
Ichiru held a lot discord towards his parents. He twisted the way his parents thought about, despite understanding that they did love him. He thought that he was a shame to them, a flaw that was unable to meet their standards. He strove and struggled to be stronger, so that the would not look at him in shame. He was unable to fulfill the role of a hunter, thus he had no purpose. He hated himself more and more for being a shame to the family. He hated his weak body and he hated that he was falling further and further behind. When they spoke quietly about how he was unable to be used, unfit to be a hunter he started to hate them. He started to loathe that they were comparing him just as everyone else did. The jeers, the expressions.
He never asked for it,not once, not ever. He was born from the same egg as his brother, yet he was inferior. He hated being inferior.
When he learned his parents had done something terrible - executed Shizuka’s lover and saw the way they were acting as if nothing happened in front of him and his brother, Ichiru began to question them. He also learned that he was appalled by what they had done. They were a convenience Ichiru found out that he wasn't loved as much as his prized brother (According to how he interpreted at that time.) He verbally expressed his feelings about his brother, how he hated him, but at the same time he loved him. Zero was an important person to him and that was something that couldn't be overwritten. There is one more person that was just as important to him as Zero and that was Hiou Shizuka. She was kind to him and he grew up with her support for four years. She refused to change him into a vampire. It was pretty clear that he had fallen in love with this beautiful Pureblood.
Her death brought much sorrow and he further delved into the situation of Hiou Shizuka, learning that the whole cause of Hiou Shizuka's sorrow was Kuran Rido, who had somehow secretly worked with the Hunters Association to plan her lover's demise. He was utterly devastated by her death and in the end attempted to pursue the person that caused it all. Hiou Shizuka was originally Kuran Rido's fiancée. Ichiru certainly had a lot of hate for this man and attempted to kill him to avenge the deceased Shizuka whom he had loved and respected for so long. He even stated that even Zero did not understand the kindness that the Pureblood Vampire had shown him. It didn’t help that Ichiru sometimes didn't know what he wanted or what he was thinking. It made it difficult for people to completely understand him. He wasn't as aggressive as his brother and often a lot more soft spoken and polite compared to Zero who was quite rude to many others. He clearly had an almost contrasting personality to Zero.
This led to many traits that Ichiru possessed that were different from his brother’s. He's generally more social than his brother, and the more talkative and expressive of the two. When he was at Kurosu Gakuen for a short time, his classmates were able to get along with him much better than Zero because of his soft spoken and polite manner of speaking. His expressions were much gentler than Zero. A friendly air always surrounded him. Despite being or feigning kindness, he was also capable of being quite cruel. Ichiru wasn't a good person, and he was, in his own right, quite manipulative. He would do what needed to be done in order to obtain what he wanted. He would be able to take action much better than Zero and often criticized his brother for his decisions, such as the time he spoke about Yuuki, saying how Zero's taste in women had changed and he didn't really have much interest in Yuuki. She seemed to be a hindrance to his relationship with his brother, especially when Yuuki was ill and Zero was taking care of her, he expressed his jealousy through a couple of words but Zero didn’t notice it. Ichiru spent most of his time being quite cruel to his brother, even though he cared for him deeply.
Ichiru also viewed vampires differently from his brother. He believed them to be god like beings, as well as there are 'good' and 'bad' vampires. Hiou Shizuka had rid him of his chronic illness by giving him her blood, which also helped shape the way he viewed vampires as well. There were good vampires, even if Shizuka didn't prove to be one; he still believed she treated him well. He would not enjoy hearing anyone talking bad about Shizuka. They didn't understand her as he would say. After her death he continued to live for her sake, for the sake of the Pureblood that was important to him. In the end, the one thing he wanted from her was the one thing he was never given. He wanted to desperately become a vampire but in the end, he remained human. His desire for this perhaps lies with the fact that he wanted power and to be useful but at the same time perhaps it was also because he wanted to protect Shizuka. As he was, a human, he didn’t have enough powers or abilities to protect her from harm completely.
He also finds Chairman Kurosu a creepy man who easily annoyed him by giving him and his brother ridiculous nicknames. Upon his death, he expressed how comforting it was to be embraced by his brother like this. One of the many tribulations he struggled with was that he was afraid Zero no longer had a place for him in his heart. Strangely enough, he seemed to disapprove of other people making his brother suffer. He would rather be the one doing it than someone else. Regarding people around him such as his instructors, and even his parents, he had always longed to be useful in some way. Ichiru never enjoyed being compared to his brother and being twins it was difficult to cope with. He didn't like the faces of sympathy he received from people. He didn't believe Zero understood the kind of feelings he had to deal with being the weaker link of the two. There were expectations and roles of the hunter family that made it difficult on Ichiru who fell further behind because of his previous chronic illness.
Being a burden to his family and being incapable of becoming an expert Vampire Hunter made him loathe himself. He was content to know while he was dying that he still had a place in his brother's heart. There was at least a place he belonged, even if it was small. Lastly, his relationship with Maria Kurenai is questionable. He expressed concern over her well-being and was hesitant when he was given the message about her but there was not a lot of information regarding her.
